Conceived from a love of Big Band Orchestration, and funk/ hip-hop samples, Evan Bassani ventured to create music that would attract new audiences while keeping traditional arranging and composing techniques. The result was Crump Cake Orchestra (CCO), a 18-piece soul and funk inspired Big Band that debuted to outstanding receptions and reviews as part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2012.
Influenced by music from Duke Ellington, all the way to Robert Glasper and beyond, CCO creates music that is about respecting the old whilst paving the way for the future and attracting audiences both young and old with its unique arrangements and compositions.
Featuring many of Adelaide’s finest young musicians CCO builds on the traditions from Big Bands such as The Count Basie and Thad Jones Orchestras, bringing the Big Band sound to a new generation.
2014 was a big year for the band, performing to a capacity crowd at the Wheatsheaf Hotel for their Just Awesome album launch, as well as recently recording the new breakfast theme music for Breakfast on Radio Adelaide, having their music added to an independent Australian film sound track ( Pretty Good Friends), and recording a live EP on July 23rd.
2015 saw the start of the voiceROM/ Crump Cake Orchestra project, where by, thanks to the Arts SA, Evan Bassani received a grant to write and record new music for Crump Cake Orchestra featuring music by and inspired from local live electronic duo voiceROM. As of August 2016 CCO are currently nearing the end of the mixing stage of the new album, and have started a new 11 piece ensemble to play in Adelaide's more regular sized venues. However, the now 20 piece ensemble is still alive and very much kicking.
On October 19th 2017, CCO will be releasing their second album, COPY COPY, a collection of reworkings and new compositions inspired by local sampled based 3 piece voiceROM.
